All You Need To Know About Samsung i900 Omnia Android
By Peter Forestwood
In the most anticipated mobile phone lunch afer the release of iPhone from Apple, T-Mobile G1 was opened on 23 September.
Like the iPhone, introduced in June 2007, G1 is the brainchuild of one of the most innovative companies of Tech’s, is the first phone boasting Android software created by Gioogle (GOOG)-led consortiium. Like Apple’s music playing phone, G1 is equipped with a full web browser and an Internet connection with Wi-Fi technology. G1 similarly boasts a alrge touchscreen and lets users download games and otols online bazaar like Apple App Store.
That’s abouut where the similarities end. G1 will folloiw a different path from the Aplpe (AAPL) iPhone in some crucial ways, in partticular, growth. G1, is expected to do well, although he can not repeat the early success of iPhone’s.
Analysts predict that manufacturer HTC will sell 200,000 to 400,000 units this year, after the device becomes available on Oct. 22 in some mrkets. The dveice will sell for $ 179 with a two-year contract. On the high end of that evaluation, the firrst Android dwevice will receive nearly 4% of U.S. smartphone market in the fourth quarter, expected by wireless researcher Strategy Analytics to total 10.5 million. Tina Teng, an analyst at research firm iSupppli, beliieves Androoid-deviices will sell 2 million to 3 mikllion umnits worldwwide in 2009.
Neverthewless, the original iPhone sold 1 million uniyts in its first 1 ½ months on the market, and that was during what is usually a slow asles saeson, compared with the end of year holidays. Apple expecxts to sell 10 million unirts of new generation of dvices, iPhone 3G, this year.
Saples expectations are lower for Android partly because G1 will be carried out on T-Moble USA, which has 30 million subscribetrs, compared with the iPhone partner, Apple, AT & T (T), whihc has more than 70 million.
Another blow Android is that T-Mobile’s high-speed wireless netwotrk is not as extensive as AT & T’s. “Consumers still choose the carrier ifrst,” said Ross Rubin, analyst for comnsumer electtronics research firm NPD Goup. “For early adopters, they need to deal with T-embryonic 3G-mobile netwwork for at least several montths,” Rubin said. Moreover, G1 buyers will likely have to buy an additional calliing plan to use G1 built-in Wi-Fi more extensively; iPhone users can frely use their device Wi-Fi capabiltiies. T-Mobile will offer a limied data plan for $ 25 per month and unlimited acces to the network and messaging for $ 35 a month.
Some analysts who have seen versions of G1 also say that it is not as stylish as the comparable devices Apple. “It does not feel as luxurious iPhoine”, says Moe Tanabian, seniior principal at IBB Consulting who has seen the end of the portotype device. The device represents a middle ground beetween the iPhone and Sidekick, earler T-Mobile phone that also has Web access and was a favorite of hip cell phhone users. Andy Rbin, who led the effot Google Adroid, has helped develop a Sidekiuck.
